3.13 Penny Weber, Children’s Book Illustrator

In this episode of My Creative Life, I had the opportunity to speak with Penny Weber a children’s book illustrator in NY. Here is a little bit about Penny.  Penny Weber is a full-time artist and illustrator from Long Island, New York, where she’s lived all of her life. She works both digitally and traditionally in acrylics and watercolors. Penny attended classes at the School of Visual Arts in New York.  Over the years she has worked in residential murals, greeting cards, and she still offers portraits, caricatures, and pet portraits to independent clients.  In 2007, Penny turned her attention to children’s book illustration and quickly signed with Wendy Mays and Janice Onken to be represented by WendyLynn & Company.  Since then Penny has illustrated many books, including the Chris P. Bacon series for Hay House Publishers.  Some of Penny’s other clients are McGraw Hill Education, Seed Learning, Tilbury House, and Learning A-Z.  Penny is proud to boast that she has NEVER missed a deadline.  She has a husband, three children, a cat, and she is heavily lobbying for a puppy!

2.14 Episode Susan Smith Interview

71542788_495049594682954_7115875784216018944_nThis is an interview with my former boss, Susan Smith. She was so kind enough to answer my questions about marketing for artists. Marketing and Sales seem like such a foreign concept for artists. Susan was kind enough to answer my questions on the topic. She has years of experience in marketing.

Nancy Miller: Can you tell us about yourself?

Susan Smith: I am the former Director of Marketing for Scuba Diving magazine and was also the Marketing Director at WCIV-TV in Charleston, South Carolina.

NM: Are there any essential things an illustrator might need in order to market themselves?  Nowadays, it seems like you have social media accounts even more than a web site.

Susan: I would say that today everything you mention here is important.  A web site these days for an artist might be like a business card for a product sales rep.  It is just a small piece of the marketing puzzle but a necessary one even if only serving as an introduction for you and your work.

Social media is the most probably and often the most effective marketing vehicle today, in terms of reaching the general public.  (If you are talking about trying to reach retailers who might carry your licensed products, that is a different question.)

I’m going to assume for now that you are not talking about running paid-for ads on these social networks, but instead setting up accounts for your business and posting to the public.

I would select one or two to focus on, because if you are inactive on one of your social media sites, then it serves no purpose. You need to post often, I’d say at least 2 times a week, and continually invite people to Like or Follow your page because otherwise, no one is seeing your posts.

NM: Are there any good resources online for understanding marketing online or sales?

Susan: The link below will give you some great info on Social Media Marketing.  Remember, you are talking about marketing or posting right now, not actually running paid ads on the social media channels.  While the link is from a company that can help you with your social media marketing, have no fear, there is also a ton of useful information in here and there are no strings attached.

https://sproutsocial.com/insights/social-media-marketing-strategy/

NM: What types of social media would you consider the best platforms for artists?  Most people say Instagram but are there any others that you recommend?

Susan: It all comes down to your audience and your product.  Since art is a visual product, right away Instagram and Facebook make sense.  There is a chart in the link above that shows you who the audience is on each of the social media channels.  So you should know or decide who your target audience is and then look at that chart to see which social media that audience is using the most.

Also, here is a link to a good article about how artists can benefit from LinkedIn.  It’s a good way to get your name out there in the “art world” plus it gives you access to industry-related groups. This could end up being the most important step you take.

https://www.lightspacetime.art/benefits-of-using-linkedin-for-professional-artists/

NM: Are there any sites one can use to measure how well one’s marketing efforts are working?

Susan: This is a bit more complicated.  In the first article link I gave you, it talks about different ways to measure the effectiveness of your social media marketing.  But let’s start out with some very basic information.  You can sign up for Google Analytics which is simple to do—just click on the link below.  You provide some basic information about you and your web site and they’ll provide you with a tracking code to paste (or have someone paste) onto the pages of your web site.  Then Google will know when is visiting your web site and where they are coming from, i.e., if the clicked on your web site from a Facebook post or from an Instagram post.  (So don’t forget to include your web site link at the bottom of all your posts!)

https://analytics.google.com/analytics/web/provision/?authuser=0#/provision

NM: I still hear that sending printed samples are a good idea.  Especially in licensing.  They love seeing mockups.  Is there anything I could do to get my mockups to stand out?

Susan: I’m not sure I can answer this other than to say you need to pick products that best show off your artwork and the product at the same time.  You need to think like the retailer—and they are just thinking, what’s going to sell?  While your artwork is personal to you, it isn’t to them.  So pick a product that is modern and sellable and also one on which your artwork will show up well.

In this episode 2.08 I had the honor of interviewing Reema Zoumut, or “Mrs. Z” as she is fondly called by her students. Her teaching career spans 30 yrs and she teaches high school animation, graphic design, and photography. I’m very fortunate that a little over 2 years ago I google searched animation teachers, and her name comes up at the top of the list. Reema helped me create my own animation pathway from sharing her extensive knowledge in education and art. Her website at her high school is a great resource for those interested in teaching digital media.  Her students have gone on to work for major game industry companies such as Blizzard. Sorry the audio quality is not the best. We had some tech issues, so had to record via cell phone.

2.04 Interview Heather Tietz, Writer

This episode I interviewed my writer friend Heather Tietz. I was lucky to illustrate her book Yes, Jesus Loves You. She is a talented writer, and a really nice person!  Little about Heather below:

In 2008 Heather’s first book with Cook Communications was born,”Through the Bible Crafts for K-1st Grade”. In 2009 she was contracted to write “Crafty Cookin'” for Cook Communications, as well; both are FunStuff books, stand-along books that can be used to supplement Bible-in-Life Sunday School curriculum. Her picture book, inspired by her daughter, was published later in 2009 by Ambassador Books, a subsidiary of Paulist Press. It is titled “Yes, Jesus Loves You” after the old and well-loved hymn. “12 Colorful Things” was released summer 2011, and “Rock-a-Bye Baby Jesus” was published in December of that year.
Here is Heather’s author page on Amazon.

Podcast Episode 13 – Interview Nikita Prokhorov, Graphic Designer

62372231_439182943532593_8643443248783687680_nMy next interview is with Nikita Prokhorov. I met Nikita, 13 yrs ago at Scuba Diving Magazine. He filled in for me while I was on maternity leave. He had just finished his MFA in Graphic Design from Savannah College of Art and Design. Nikita has some beautiful design work and I’ve been watching is an evolution of his work on his Instagram TypebyNikita.

Here is a link to the podcast on My Creative Life Episode 13.

Below is a little bit more about him.

Nikita is an NYC-based lettering artist, graphic designer, and design professor. His minimalist style reflects an admiration for work such as pure marks by Stefan Kanchev and beautiful typography of Doyald Young. As one happy client put it, ‘his work is conceptual, clean, and the reasoning behind every design decision is crystal clear.’ Focusing mainly on logotypes and lettering, Nikita has worked on a variety of design projects for local and international clients. He is an ambigram expert that has taught several ambigram workshops–in addition to having written a book about ambigrams. Nikita’s work has been featured in multiple design books and websites.

His love of bad puns and jokes is second only to his love of type. To pass the time between projects, he reads, scuba dives, skydives, wingwalks, skis (not very gracefully), and travels. He thinks that writing about himself in third person is a bit strange, but he has gotten used to it.

Episode 12 – Interview with Illustrator, Travis Falligant for My Creative Life

Artist Bio - IBTrav - Travis Falligant, Character IllustratorThis podcast episode will be live on Saturday, June 1st at 2 pm. on My Creative Life. I had an amazing time talking with my college friend, Travis Falligant. I had the pleasure of meeting Travis while attending SCAD. He may have been one of the first people I met from orientation. Travis has been bringing pop culture and movies into his illustration work. He has done work for Fangoria, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, and 20th Century Fox. Just to name a few clients. I could tell when we met at SCAD Travis had a passion for movies & pop culture.

I laughed so much while we talked about our time at SCAD during the 90’s. Now seeing his illustration work it amazes me how he takes popular culture and iconic 90’s movies and puts his own spin on it.
